My first ever Mom n Me Camp to Kamshet with Kshitij

Grab your backpack and get going! Well, that’s how summers should be- camping, adventure, games, unfettered time, music and of course lots of fun. And, my last summer was exactly this when I went for lakeside mom and me camp adventure to Kamshet with Kshitij.

Some experiences change your perspective on life and leave you wanting for more. This was definitely one of those trips for me with my little bundle of joy who had the time of his life at this well-thought out and planned trip.

To begin with, it was my first time, and I had my own apprehensions going for a 3-day trip to an unknown place with equally unknown people. But, the whole idea of staying in tents and exploring a new place with my child was too exciting to let it go.

DAY 1
Almost 100km away from Mumbai, it was a few hours of drive before we reached our destination. Surrounded by lush green lawns, landscapes and riverside, it was our peaceful, mesmerising campsite away from the hustle-bustle of the city.

While I was captivated by the beautiful scenery, my kid was getting restless about the different kinds of games, adventurous activities that I had described to him in the countdown to the camp. Thanks to the facilitators and the other team members, all the kids soon started interacting with others and were on their own in no time. Watching my kid mingle with everyone within no time was indeed very heartening.

The tents at the campsite were top-notch and honestly much better than I expected. Tent allotment was followed by an orientation session- very much needed for first-timers like me. Though the session was about dos and don’ts, honestly it never sounded restrictive.

And finally, the activities began. From rock Climbing to zip line to tyre walking, my little one tried his hands at everything. While he was scared to try zip-line earlier on, a few words of encouragement from the facilitator did the trick.

Interestingly, in my case those words of encouragement came from my son- ‘C’mon mumma, you can do it…. Just go for it..’ and to say the least, it was heart-warming.

DAY 2

After a light, and thoughtfully prepared breakfast, we embarked on our first trekking experience together. The way team kshitij helped us with map reading and designing was amazing.

My geographical sensibilities have never been great but now I know I can take a map and embark on unknown territories. Just like the first day, we had a bonfire at night with tons of fun, dance and music.

DAY 3
The best and the most exciting day for me personally. Water sports and activities are always fun. While I had done kayaking before, I was little sceptical about my son trying it. However, seeing Kshitij’s safety equipment, staff, and other measures, I knew it couldn’t get easier and safer than this.

What touched me the most in these three days was the fact that I wasn’t comparing my child to any one else because there was no outside pressure of competition.

While kids were encouraged and motivated to try everything, they were free to make choices which were also respected. No one was judging or assessing them and they were allowed to be themselves.

With summer holidays just around the corner, my son wants to go solo this time. And honestly, I have no fears or apprehensions. Team Kshitij is not just professional but also very caring. With so many exciting camp options, he is really finding it hard to decide on one. Maybe he can go on two camps (I am not telling him this now).

Choose your Breakfast wisely!

We are mostly in a rush during the mornings and breakfast often takes a back seat as it feels like an unnecessary, time-consuming affair. It gets even more challenging when you have a toddler to handle as well.

We often tend to give this important meal a miss, especially us mothers, as the added responsibility of kids and family leaves us with no time for ourselves. For me, meal times used to be very stressful as my child mostly refused to eat just about anything and everything. I had to patiently sit with him, sometimes for hours, to make sure he finished his meals. For moms with school going kids, it gets even tougher as you have to dedicate time to getting them ready on time, preparing their lunchboxes, etc.

When my child started school, I didn’t have a choice of sitting down and dedicating a couple of hours to feeding him anymore. Most mornings would begin with just a few bites of biscuits along with a few sips of milk. Anything over and above would not only take a lot of convincing but mostly just end up in tantrums – one thing you would want to avoid in the mornings at any cost. Hence, I would give up and feed him nicely only once he would get back home.

Gradually I realized that he wouldn’t eat during mornings not because he didn’t feel hungry but out of habit. Even on the days when he would stay home, he would just grab a few bites of biscuits and wouldn’t eat anything at all until noon. Often, he would get cranky for no specific reason. That’s when it hit me that he is missing out on energy from the most important meal of the day along with a bunch of essential nutrients.

Why is Breakfast the Most Important Meal of the Day?

The first meal of the day that breaks the overnight fast can give you the fuel to kick start your daily activities. When we skip breakfast, we try to run on an empty stomach which is almost like trying to drive a car which has run out of gas.
Studies have proven that those who eat breakfast regularly have enhanced cognitive performance. Kids have improved attention, memory and better academic achievement with regular breakfast consumption.

Breakfast eaters tend to have healthier body weights. Breakfast skippers have greater body weights, higher BMI and waist circumference. Breakfast intake improves several parameters associated with obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Overall breakfast consumption promotes physical and mental well-being.

What Constitutes a Balanced Breakfast?

Nutritionists believe that a balanced breakfast is the one that includes foods from three essential food groups e.g. one serving of whole grain group, one serving of dairy (milk/curds) or lean protein group (egg, chicken) and one serve of fruit or vegetable group. Cereal, milk and fruit is an example of a balanced breakfast.

Other examples include a bowl of vegetable poha with peanuts, a glass of toned milk and cubed papaya; vegetable parathas made with whole wheat flour with a bowl of curds and a fruit; idli sambhar with a bowl of curds and a fruit; oats porridge with fruits and dry fruits.

Nutrients missed at breakfast are not compensated for through the consumption of a mid-morning meal or through other meals in the day. Children, as well as adults, often prefer eating dry cereal for breakfast while on the go. However, adding milk or yogurt to your bowl of cereal, along with a handful of seasonal fruits and nuts makes it balanced and fuels your body and brain with the combination of carbs and proteins as well as helps provide calcium to meet your RDA.
